Learning Fingerstyle guitar - Preferably darker sounding styles

Hello all,

As the title suggests, I want to learn to fingerpick better.

Some info about me - have played guitar for 15+ years. Mostly blues and rock. I can John Lee Hooker and Robert Johnson style blues with my fingers pretty decently.

But...

I struggle with proper fingerstyle guitar - such as Latin fingerstyle, Classical style or styles such as that of Mark Knopfler and Tommy Emannuel.

Of course there is a ton of information on the web - but I am very interested in hearing what lessons/videos YOU found very helpful, and after reading this post - you think would benefit me also.

So please share your knowledge and help me and others out learning these styles.

A little over a year in..

I'm a little over a year in. I spent the first year messing with real easy stuff(mostly nirvana riffs which now i find boring) I've started to pick up more difficult stuff. I've started working on SRV texas flood. I've managed to get through the opening lick through the first fill(a year ago I would have never imagined)

With that being said...

I do feel like some stagnation coming on as far as my progress goes.

Any tips on what I should work on at this point? Something crucial that'll really push my development along?

Most important thing to practice for improvising

I see so many posts about improvising and how to not sound like you're noodling or just playing scales or arpeggios, etc. The list goes on and on. The single most important thing to do is transcribe. Start with players know for their simple style. Heck - start with non-guitar players. Learn a Miles solo. Chet Baker. Those guys are great for their simplicity. Wes as well. Then move up to more complex players. Still too hard? Learn it from someone who's already transcribed it. Whether it's sheet music, tab, or a YouTube lesson. But have the goal of memorizing it in the end. Music is a language and you won't learn it without copying others. Same way you learned English.

How do I start playing melodies (acoustic)?

I have played off and on for years, but always chords/ rhythm. Now I have a regular gig as part of an acoustic duo, and sing and play chords on acoustic folk/Irish/ Americana. I have been adding in fingerstyle and basic Travis picking, but I want to keep developing and learn how to play, uh, melodies. (Do you call it "lead" when you're playing acoustic with a fiddle player?)

Should I just start with the pentatonic? What resources do you all recommend for acoustic/ Americana? I don't want to shred or djent, but I would like to be able to play useful fills or a 16-bar solo in Carrickfergus or Cover Me Up. Where should I start? Thanks!

(P.S. I have a MIM Strat as well, and look forward to having fun with that too, but acoustic is the priority at the moment.)

Any tips holding the electric?

I know it sounds goofy but the guitar constantly slips from my lap. Ive seen YT videos that say to secure it with the picking arm but i cant seem to find a good position. My forearm also has a lot of tension in it when playing. Its seems like my arm doesn't twist enough for it to be playable. Anyone ever experiences this? I'm ready to play but its never comfortable.

To learn or not to learn

Hi guys, looking for everybody's opinions I've had the guitar now for two years and was really interested in progressing and going further to be able to one day perform for people as the emotions I feel for music are unlike anything else and I show real passion for it both recorded and live which is why I'd like to create a band after going to my first couple gigs namely Muse and Foo Fighters and a Smith's tribute band. Two years later I've found it very hard to pick up at first I was so full of optimism and was learning using Rocksmith and fender play and just playing some general beginner songs now two years have passed and I don't think I've spent 24 hours over the entire period learning. I feel like I expect to much of myself being the person that I am and wanting everything perfect otherwise I give up quite easy. Now I just want to know what everyone's opinion would be if they were in my shoes as at the moment I can't get into it.
