During Alter Bridge's December 9 show at L’Olympia in Paris, the band's frontman, Myles Kennedy, tipped his hat to Jeff Buckley by performing "Hallelujah" with Buckley's own 1983 Fender Telecaster.
The Telecaster was Buckley's main guitar during his career - he can be seen playing it in the "Hallelujah" music video, which you can watch below for comparison.
The guitar was loaned to Kennedy by Matt's Guitar Shop in Paris. According to the band, the performance marked the first time that "Hallelujah" had been played publicly on the guitar since Buckley's tragic death in 1997.
“This song was played here over 20 years ago by a gentleman that is probably one of my biggest influences and a number of other people’s as well," Kennedy says at the start of the performance. "We owe a great debt to Mr. Jeff Buckley.”
"Hallelujah" was originally written and recorded by Leonard Cohen for his 1984 album, Various Positions. While not a hit originally, the song grew in popularity, and became synonymous with Buckley after he covered it on his hugely influential 1994 debut album, Grace.
