Unfortunately, this is a skill that takes some time and dedication to figure out, but this is how you would do it! Step 1 - Learn the basic chord progression with a simple strumming part. Step 2 - Pick out and learn how to play melody on its own. Step 3 - Experiment with different chord shapes and or keys, using capo if necessary, to accommodate playing through the chords while keeping the melody on top. So you have a practical example, I’ll show you how to play the classic hymn “What a friend we have in Jesus” in the key of A. Then I’ll show you how I figure out how to play the song’s rhythm and melody together in a key I have never played the song in before. It’s a lot to take in, but with dedicated practice time, I know you will be able to do it! What song would you most like to be able to play in this style?

In this lesson, we’ll be changing the key of Free Fallin’ using a capo. This is especially useful when a song feels like it’s too high or too low to sing. With a capo, you can raise or lower the key of the song so that it’s in a more comfortable spot. If you don’t have a capo, there are a few tutorials out there on how you can put together a makeshift one. They are, however, fairly affordable and a helpful tool every campfire guitar player should have at the ready. Lastly, you’ll want to work on thinking about the way the next chord looks and feels before the change so you’re not caught off guard. You might think this skill is reserved for the gifted few, but there are some simple processes that you can follow to find the key of just about any song. In this guitar lesson, Andrew Clarke will show you his system for identifying the key of your favorite song. The first thing you’ll need to know is a basic major scale shape. This can be any major scale shape, but in this case, we’ll use a 3-string E major scale. Take some time to get it under your fingers so you don’t have to think about it too much. Now we’ll take that shape and move it up and down the fretboard while listening to the song we’re trying to find the key of. Eventually, one of the positions will sound like it “fits”. That location gives you the key of the song. Simply locate the root notes of the scale shape and that’s the key you’re in. You may not be able to immediately notice which one fits, but the more often you work on this, the quicker and easier it will be to identify the key. If you’re still struggling with this method, you can try adding some ear training exercises to your daily practice time. It won’t be long before finding keys of songs becomes instantaneous for you. That will include technique adjustments as well as adjustments you can make to your guitar to get rid of buzz and rattle. Depending on how your guitar is set up, it might be as simple as just tweaking your playing technique a little bit. Make sure you’re coming down right behind the frets and right on your fingertips. If you can eliminate the buzzing by moving your fingers around, you’ll know it’s a technique issue. If the technique tweaks don’t fix it, then you can look into making some guitar adjustments. The ones we’ll cover in this lesson are dressing frets, replacing the nut, and shimming the saddle.
