Sonny Landreth is a two-time Guitar Player cover artist, most recently gracing the face of GP’s July 2018, slide guitar-focused issue. Landreth has an incredibly evolved and inventive style that has inspired legions to try their hands at techniques such as fretting behind the slide and incorporating harmonics into adventurous slidescapes.
Landreth is always one of the first cats Eric Clapton calls to meet him at the Crossroads Guitar Festival, and Landreth has spent a good portion of the last few years on the road playing with another recent GP cover artist, John Hiatt. Landreth’s new album, Blacktop Run, drops two days after this show, so concertgoers will soon be treated to some fresh goods.
Landreth has been expanding his horizons immensely in recent years. In addition to dropping the slide and playing in standard tuning with Hiatt, Landreth went acoustic for one of the two sets released in 2017 as Recorded Live in Lafayette. He informed GP that Blacktop Run is a “mixture of acoustic and electric,” and that for this show he’ll “start out with a half hour acoustic set, and then switch to the electric for about an hour.”
Landreth is traveling with another amazing act, roadhouse blues pianist and vocalist Marcia Ball, who was named Texas State Musician of the Year in 2018. GP Presents is proud to welcome Landreth and Ball to the fabulous Freight & Salvage, where the acoustics in the theatre are matched only by the friendliness of the staff.
