So for a quick background I have been playing guitar for roughly 10 years now. I started on acoustic and have been almost exclusively electric for the past 4 or 5 years. I never really took lessons and have always been self-taught by ear and by using online resources. Because of this, I never really developed an actual understanding of the music theory behind playing guitar. Beyond knowing chords and some scales, I have always just been more focused on playing rather than knowing how to play.
I feel that this has led me to the rut I currently feel like I am in. The whole reason I wanted to play electric guitar was to learn how to play improvised blues solos. I started a few years ago and have definitely learned how to solo over a basic progression, but I feel stuck in the basic pentatonic scale that matches the 1 chord and I feel like what I play doesn't really sound like actual blues "riffs" except for the few I've copied from people. I understand that playing more intricate and better-sounding solos essentially involves blending notes from the scales of the 1,4 and 5 chords but when I start trying to figure that out I feel so lost, especially when I start looking at the fretboard diagrams with the scale notes all over them.
Does anyone have any easy-to-understand tips for transitioning improv solos from beginner to advanced?
