I started taking lessons in April of 2019. So about 9 months. I read all these threads from people who say they have been playing for 3,4,5, etc months and are disappointed they can only play this song or that song or that they know all the solos to these songs. I don’t get it. I’m nowhere near there. I understand that learning anything, especially a musical instrument is a different journey for everyone, but this seems like a major disconnect.
Like I said, I’m 9 months in of weekly guitar lessons. I started out the gate strong, practicing every day. But admittedly, there was a good chunk where I just didn’t practice a ton. I’d go to my lessons but wasn’t super motivated. Recently I’ve been much more engaged and motivated to practice. I make sure I get at least an hour of practice in a day. But my skills aren’t really where it seems others are. Currently I’m learning two very basic songs, Last Kiss by Pearl Jam (acoustic song with a basic chord progression of G, Em, C, D) and Closing Time by Semisonic (electric song with a chord progression of D, Am, C, G). I can play those chords but it’s the ability to transition quickly and smoothly that causes me issues. I can play those songs with quarter notes pretty easily but when I get into the actual strumming patterns that require eighth notes, I still can’t transition as quickly as needed.
Also I’m working on my scales. I’ve memorized one major scale and one pentatonic scale pattern.
I guess my question is this: am I just really slow? Should I be learning different stuff than what I currently am? Or are a lot of the posts I read just bragging and I shouldn’t compare myself.
