The summer of 1973 saw an unprecedented wave of talented touring musicians, including the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and the Kinks, to name a few.
On June 10, two of those acts crossed paths when the Allman Brothers opened for the Grateful Dead at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington D.C. It was, by all accounts, an amazing concert, starting with opening act Wet Willie, continuing with the Allmans and concluding with a powerful, and lengthy, set by the Dead.
Toward the end of the Dead’s set, Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts joined the band for this incredible 13-plus minutes of wow on “That’s Alright Mama.”
The blues song, penned by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup in 1946, was originally released as “That’s All Right.” In 1954, Elvis Presley released it as his first single and it landed at Number 113 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.
By the end of the year, the Allmans would reunite with the Dead’s Jerry Garcia, when Garcia and drummer Bill Kreutzmann made a surprise appearance at the group’s December 31 show at the San Francisco Cow Palace and jammed with them on their anthem “Whipping Post.”
