upstroke strum hitting only high E and B with pick

Noticed that I'm catching more of thin E and B only on upstroke when using pick. With fingers it looks like I'm hitting more of middle ones of B+G+D and sounds so much "subtle" or "mellower" compare to pick which on up strum are little harsh. So whats the correct string to hit on up strum?
