In the lead-up to releasing remastered versions of their albums Kill ’Em All and Ride the Lightning a few years ago, Metallica unveiled a number of rare audio and video nuggets from the era.
One of the highlights was a video of a club performance of “Whiplash,” from August 12, 1983, at the Metro, in Chicago. It opens with a killer bass solo from Cliff Burton and some crowd-pleasing stage moves from James Hetfield.
At the time, Hetfield and guitarist Kirk Hammett were both 20, drummer Lars Ulrich was 19 and Burton was 21. Kill ’Em All has been released roughly three weeks earlier, on July 25.
