Beginner stuck with D chord switching and Justin Guitar 1 minute challenges!

Hi,

So i got an electric gutiar and thought it would be a good hobby to get into. I'm following the justin guitar course and am still in the beginner phase (stage 1). i've gone through his 1 min changes, and while i can switch between A and E chord quite nicely and fast, i literally suck while playing and changing to the D chord. For the D chord, i can't get both my 2nd and 3rd finger to hit strings together! Its always the 2nd finger which touches the 1st sstring first and then the 3rd finger then goes to the 2nd string. This causes me to slow down a lot!
Whereas for the A & E chord all my fingers work in sync! How do i get over this obstacle? Any tips to help a newbie out?

Also, another newbie question: I really want to play lead guitar and play cover's of songs (like the ones covered by kfir orchin) etc. So how much should I focus on the chords part?
