GP Presents Leo Kottke March 5 in Oakland, CA - Win Tickets!

GP Presents Leo Kottke March 5 in Oakland, CA - Win Tickets!

Leo Kottke is one of the most celebrated acoustic guitar players of all time, as well as a singular storyteller with a devastating sense of humor. His distinctive fingerstyle playing is always impressive for its singular rhythmic idiosyncrasies and its deep resonant tone. Kottke delivers heavy doses of his distinctly dry wit during stage banter and in conversation. Here are a few nuggets from his January 2006 GP/Frets interview:

“If you’re willing to humiliate yourself in front of an audience, you’ll find that a developing song exerts its own influence about where it wants to go.”

“Stay away from open tunings, they’re just a waste of time! You’ll find you get something you like in a kind of boneheaded way and you end up with tunings that apply to only one tune, and you’ll have to tune to get there. One of the reasons I still use open tunings is because I have to play some of my hits. I try to come up with new stuff in the same tunings so I don’t have to always retune onstage.”

Ah Leo - always insightful, delightfully self-depreciating and somehow endlessly inspirational. Come join the party! Kottke is currently touring up the California coast and making lots of stops along the way. Check his full list of “jobs.” Guitar Player Presents is thrilled to welcome him to Yoshi’s in Oakland on the first Thursday in March. Get tickets now here
