Basic maintenance could be changing the strings and applying some oil on the fretboard etc.
I just changed my acoustic guitar's strings for the first time ever and applied some oil on the fretboard. I got the strings for $12 and I learned so much changing them. If I went to have them changed to a professional, it would've cost me $50-60.
I'm just saying that it's extremely valuable to get to know your own instrument on many levels, not just by playing. Like your car, it's good to know the basics of how it works, how the small issues are fixed and what's the problem if it breaks down so you won't have to rely on professional help every time.
