Broke string while tuning

I'm a newbie and very recently I bought an electric guitar.

The first day I tuned the guitar and it went all right, the second day the guitar was out of tune and I tuned it again. Third day the same and I broke the second string.

To do that I was Following "JustinGuitar" lesson as recommended on the wiki.

In the video he says that it is a good habit to always tune up your guitar up and what I did was going from note D to note A. Eventually the string popped out and I had to find the little piece that holds the string at the back of the guitar that was lost in my room. lol

I believe instead of going like this:D->E->F->G->A

I should have gone like this instead:D->C->-B->A

So basically tune down instead of up as suggested in the video. Now I am a bit confused, when I was tuning I was feeling the tuning peg harder to rotate but I could still rotate it and noticing the notes going up on the tuner.

Any tips?
