Can I improve well by just learning tabs for songs I like?

Haven’t self-taught an instrument before, so idk the best way to start.

I can read sheet music okayish on guitar and know my chords. Have extensive background on other instruments.

If I want to get good at guitar, is it essential that I learn the theory/technique from books or can I improve by learning as I go from tabs of songs that I like?
