Chord Progressions and Modes

I’ve been learning guitar for almost a year now. I’m a lot better than I used to be, but boy do I still feel like I know NOTHING. I know a decent amount of songs, the caged system, and pentatonics but I’m dying to learn how to create my own progressions and then solo over them. Modes still confuse me, other than just knowing it’s a major scale starting on a different note. I can solo pretty decently over some of my fav songs, but when I start hearing John Mayer do a key change, improvise with chords and start mixing major and minor I feel even more stupid. Can anyone help me understand how to start making chord progressions, and where to go from here? I feel like I don’t know intervals as well as I should, so recently I’ve been working on that, but I don’t know how to do anything but basically go up a scale with chords. My goal is to just be able to pick up a guitar, and come up with a chord progression with someone and freely be able to have a musical conversation with my guitar.
