Fountains of Wayne bassist Adam Schlesinger died Wednesday, April 1, at the age of 52. The Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated songwriter had been suffering from the coronavirus.
Schlesinger was most well-known for being one of the two frontmen and main songwriters in Fountains of Wayne, the critically acclaimed New York City power-pop band beloved for its ultra-catchy, lyrically dense tales of down-on-their-luck suburbanites and quirky, unforgettable, often-overlooked characters.
The band scored a one-off mega-hit in 2003 with "Stacy's Mom," a humorous, heavily Cars-indebted rocker that remains a pop radio/karaoke favorite to this day.
Schlesinger was also a first-call songwriter for television and film, scoring an Oscar nomination for the titular song for the 1996 Tom Hanks film, That Thing That You Do!, and three Emmy award wins for his collaborations with Neil Patrick Harris and his work on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
He also played bass in the New York City power-pop band Ivy, and was nominated for a Tony award for his work on the musical adaptation of Cry-Baby.
Our thoughts go out to Schlesinger's family and friends.
