need some help with ear training

hey guys. I've been playing guitar for a year and a half or so and have now just started ear training. before I would just literally copy and paste songs from youtubers to my memory but now I feel like I should try to listen to music and replicate it through ear. so I'm obviously starting with easy songs, like happy birthday. I've nailed it down. though I only got it cause I hit the first note by luck, not through humming. my question is, if I wanted to learn, let's say twinkle twinkle little star or some sort, how can I manage to find the first note? I know people say through humming or singing, but whenever I usually hum and I play a note it sounds off, then when I check online or something, I actually hit the correct note but it just doesnt sound right when I hummed it. any help? thank you.

tldr: cant seem to correlate correct note with humming and cant seem to find first note to a song through ear.
