Recommended pick thickness for beginners?

I've been practicing guitar without a pick so far since I find it difficult but I've seen loads of videos that say that it's better to use a pick but they either say use a thick pick or a thin one. What's the recommended thickness for a beginner? I don't do solos or anything, there is the occassional event where I have to pick individual strings in a song but I would mostly use it for strumming anyway. Upstrokes feel weird on my pick so yeah, what thickness is recommended? Thanks
