Here is the chord (standard tuning - from Hail Hail by Pearl Jam)
0 4 2 2 2 0
For the life of me I keep muting the D string with my ring finger playing the 4 on the A string. I play the bar just fine (2's on the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd stings). I just play the 4 & 2 on the 5th and 4th string I am fine...Its when I use my pointer finger to bar the 2's on and try to play the 4 with my ring finger I get a pile of garbage coming out of my practice amp.
Another song I am trying to learn has a part where you palm mute the 6th string and go back to the 5th string...rinse & repeat. Its 5-7-8 on the 5th but palm muting the 5th (easy) 8th (IMPOSSIBLE) fret on the 6th string (Rose of Sharyn - KSE: after the scream "can I turn back time"). Minor difference here is its my pinky muting the 5th not my ring finger but similar issue.
So, what can I do from a training perspective to keep my ring finger from muting the string behind it? I self admittedly am probably coming at the note at an angle too close to the fret board (like a power chord) and need to come over the top more. It also looks like I am not using the tip of my ring finger as much. This looks to be more fixable for the riff (pinky easier to work with only two strings as well) but more of a challenge from the chord perspective. Keeping the bar down with my pointer and coming over the top more is not easy for me.
Any tips/exercises that could help with this would be appreciated.
