Power Chord Pain – Kyle – Student Spotlight

In this student spotlight video, I will try to help Kyle figure out why he has cramping and pain in his fret-hand and wrist when playing 3 note power chord shapes.

The answer lies in the wrist. He is bringing his forearm downwards, which makes him arch his wrist in order reach the notes. This causes a lot of tension and eventually, injury to the wrist and hand.

So I show him how he can keep his arm in the same position that he does when playing two note power chords, therefore allowing his to keep his wrist as straight as possible. I use Billie Joe Armstrong as an example of who to watch because he does this very well.

If you would like for me to help you with a problem you are having in your playing, please submit your own video question for this YouTube series on the Student Spotlight video uploader page.

Thanks for submitting your question Kyle! I hope this video helps you crank out those punk rock tunes pain free for many years to come!

Steve Vai's Quirky Pentatonics

Steve Vai's Quirky Pentatonics

A very cool concept that can be applied with the pentatonic scale and triads. This gives you the option of three different pentatonic scales that you can play over the Lydian mode. This opens up a bunch of possibilities when creating new lines and vocabulary. Not only that, but you get a whole new set of sounds from the pentatonic scale we all know and love.

Randy Rhoads’ Lost Solo – Complete Guitar Lesson

In this Randy Rhoads' Lost Solo guitar lesson video, we will take an in-depth look at this great off-the-cuff solo by Randy that was discovered 30 years after he untimely death. The story goes that this recording simply caught Randy warming up and that they were probably just trying to dial in the recording levels while he was getting ready. It is a good thing they did, because they caught some great stuff! Just goes to show that a quick little warm-up for Randy, is an amazing shred guitar study for the rest of us. I will go through the entire solo, which lasts a little over a minute, phrase-by-phrase. Good luck with this one, it is quite challenging! Carl...

WhatsMyChord.com | Guitar Chord Finder (need feedback!)

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a minimalistic guitar chord finder with a simple interface. I'm in the final stages of it and would love some feedback. It currently detects around 2000 chords.

Thanks!

Should I focus on learning a bunch of riffs or full songs??

Im teaching myself the electric guitar, I know how to play the basics on acoustic but it’s very intermediate camp fire-y skill wise m... I like grunge and alternative rock , punk etc and I guess I’m trying to figure out to go about teaching myself.. should I absorb and learn a bunch of famous riffs or dedicate a week at a time learning and perfecting an entire song? Thoughts? How did you learn the electric ?

Should I start taking proper guitar lessons?

I’ve been playing seriously for around a year now(self taught) and I’ve made lots of progress which I am really happy and proud of, but I feel like I’ve been learning the wrong way, because I don’t know a lot of theory and I kinda skipped through a lot of the basics and learned to play by just learning songs and licks and scales... I know how to play a bunch of chords, but I don’t know the actual name of the chords, since a lot of them are fancy jazz chords that are unnecessarily LONG😂 I was just wondering if I should just keep trying to teach myself, and start really focussing on music theory or just get myself a teacher. I really want a teacher but I’m just confused because I don’t even know what level to consider myself as, and I don’t know if it’ll be a bad investment to take lessons just to learn the basics... I’ve tried to learn theory myself couple times before but I always just gave up because I couldn’t pay attention to the videos...

What do you guys think is the best path for me to take? And if I were to get a teacher, how long do you think it will take me to learn all the theory I need in order to catch up to my playing?

Thank you!

Graceful upstroke with guitar pick?

I have been playing for a bit now and can’t seem to befriend the pick- especially in regards to strumming upwards. Downwards sounds okay, but still pretty sloppy, too.

I primarily prefer the sound without the pick, but there are some instances where the pick gives the sound a lil extra oomph. Anyone have any personal tips?

Sight-Reading: The Complete Guide

Hey Guitarists,

I truly believe that learning to sight-read music is one of the most important skills we can develop as guitar players, and musicians in general. Not only does learning to sight read increase our competence when playing and analysing music, but is also increases our employability, efficiency of practice, and theory knowledge. This tutorial is jam-packed with everything you need to know to leverage your sight reading skills, from the best ways to recognise intervals, rhythms, and chords, to ways you can practice your sight reading, without a guitar. Check it out in the article below, and let’s open up a discussion: please let me know any thoughts or questions you have. Cheers!
