Alice by Tom Waits, how to make the picking pattern more interesting

I'm learning Alice by Tom Waits and I have the chords down and a picking pattern which I find ok but a bit boring to play all through the song. The one I'm using is, shown here https://youtu.be/WdFmv04rzUA starting from minutes 5, basically it's plucking two basses following by plucking two high notes of the chord together and then another bass. Is there some kind of variations I can apply in order to make the rhythm a little bit more interesting?

Also, can someone confirm whether or not the song in 2/4?

Thank you
