I just got a guitar last month but I am struggling with my first 2 chords

I am trying to learn a and d cord on my acoustic guitar but I am struggling. I don’t know if it is the guitar but the thinnest string is buzzing and doesn’t sound right. I sometimes block the vibration with my other finger or I may not be pressing hard enough. How long does it usually take to get good with a few chords because I feel like I’m taking a long time.

NEW All Access Visit History

To access this page, you will now see a small clock in the header. Each time you view a lesson page you will now see the image for this page, the date you last visited, how many times you have visited this page, the category the lesson is in, and a link back to the page.

When tuning a guitar do other notes change as well?

I think I worded that wrong but I’m noticing that when I move onto the next string to tune it, other notes on the guitar will also change in sound as well, is this normal?

Acoustic size advice please

Hi all,

So after years of saying I wanted to learn to play I asked my family for some money towards a guitar for Xmas.

Due to the virus and my barber getting covid last week my partner and I have to isolate. So her parents drop the gifts of for us at the door, lo and behold there is a guitar shaped present!

Problem is it’s quite small, they’ve already said that it was a 2nd hand one to get started with and have bought it from their niece, who’s a 15 year old. I’m a 29 year old 6,3 bloke with big hands.

After a little bit of research I found out about sizes. So it’s 36 inches in length and the scale size (excuse me if that’s wrong) is 25 inches. According to my research that’s full size?

My only worry is that maybe the fret sizes are different and if they aren’t would learning on it be detrimental to my learning process?

Sorry for the long winded post, I’m eager to get going and also don’t want to offend my in laws if it’s not a good idea to play it!

Any help is greatly appreciated, also is there any good YouTube videos I should follow to get started?

Edit: I forgot to mention that in a few weeks time I will probably be going to a shop to buy a proper guitar. Would it be worth me just waiting until then or could I start using the gift guitar to learn basic techniques?

Recommendations for challenging, complete, electric guitar songs.

What are some of y’all’s recommendation for challenging solo electric guitar songs? I spend a lot of time learning Tommy Emmanuel songs on acoustic and am having trouble finding a similar catalogue of music for the electric guitar.

I really enjoy learning songs where the guitar is carrying the whole song (bass line, melody, percussion, etc). What are some electric guitar songs out there that have a similar style?

Anyone know a good guitar chord progression generator?

If you have sheet music that has unfamiliar chords, and no chord charts, how do you guys put it together?

I was hoping for a site where I could enter the chord names, and then it would display all the chords I need on one page. These are for custom arrangements so I can't simply find them online.

Eyes Without A Face Guitar Lesson – Billy Idol

In this Eyes Without a Face guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all of the chords, riffs and guitar solo for this Billy Idol classic.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.

Steve Stevens has some great guitar work in the first half of "Eyes Without a Face". From the chord progressions, to the natural harmonic melodies, he creates an ethereal quality to the song.

However, midway through, he launches into a killer guitar riff that eventually dissolves into a guitar solo that is like a collection of textures more than anything. Steve Stevens is always really great at creating these types of solo. They are always very unpredictable, contain a lot both of highly unique yet very musical ideas, that also fit the song perfectly.

I will take you through each section of the song in the order that each appears on the original recording.

Too Young To Fall In Love Guitar Lesson – Motley Crue

In this Too Young To Fall In Love guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song from Motley Crue note-for-note.

The tuning is D standard. That requires you to tune every string on the guitar down a whole-step. That is, starting from the 6th string, D G C F A D.

Mick Mars' main riff is a lot of fun to play. It can be a bit challenging as well since it jumps around the fretboard quite a lot. I will show you all of the riffs in the order that each appears on the original recording.

I will also demonstrate how to play Mick Mars' solo note-for-note. This is a great solo based partly around the Phrygian Dominant scale. This gives the solo a very exotic sound. I will also point out the differences between how Mick Mars played this solo around the time of the recording compared to more recent live performances.
