The easy way to learn barre chords.

I constantly see this as something new guitarists struggle with. So I’m going to share the way I’ve taught people and they have always found it an easy progression.

First I’m going to start with what I think the 2 main problems are.

  • Strength to push all the strings down.

  • Coordination and knowledge of what it feels like to push all the strings down while using other fingers to fret.

We are going to approach this in a format of slow progression. If you’re struggling I heavily suggest starting at step 1 even if you think it’s too easy.

Step 1. Barre three strings (E, B, G). Use proper fretting technique keep your finger close to the fret without being on top of it. Now play through the strings one by one. If any have buzz adjust pressure or placement until they’re all ringing clear. Also focus on using as little pressure as possible.

Step 2. Move onto 4 strings (E, B, G, D). Now I want use to use pressure from the end of your finger to press down on the G, and D strings. For the E, and B I want you to create pressure by pulling back with your elbow. If doing this correctly you should be able to use a small amount of pressure, even allowing you to do so without squeezing with your thumb. Next make sure they all ring out clear.

Step 3. Repeat this adding one string each time playing lightly and using the method of two points of pressure. Pressing with your finger and pulling with your elbow.

Other points. -Have a guitar with a low action. - If you can’t barre yet and you’re playing with higher gauge strings it might be worth dropping them down. - Practice with a clean tone, this allows you to identify fret buzz. - This still might take a bit but it’s a good way to track progress you can see how many strings you can barre cleanly.

I hope this helps. Feel free to dm me, I’m happy to help anyone with putting more music into the world.
