Strumming Help

Hi! I’m learning to play the guitar by myself and I’m struggling with the strumming, I’m watching tutorials online but i feels like - from the videos I watch - I’m supposed to wrest know this, since it’s not discussed in much detail. Also, I can read tabs just fine, but how i’m supposed to know how the song is meant to be played? Thx for the attention
