My advice to beginners

I see a lot of posts from beginners asking about the value of learning modes. In the beginning they are not valuable. However, they can be used for technique exercises. The benefit being that when you reach the stage of improvising on the fly, your fingers are already trained to the intervals and patterns of modes. So for example....set your metronome to 60 bpm. Pick the G note on the low E and hammer the A and B notes. Then pick the C note on the A string and hammer the D and E. Then pick the F# on the D string and hammer the G and A notes. Guess what? You just developed great hammer technique and learned the first octave of the G Ionian mode. Now repeat the exercise except hammer and pull off the notes. Now repeat and trill the notes three times each. Basically you can use the modes to come up with great finger exercise while developing your ear and learning the modes.
