Sick Riffs: Nicklas Thomsen reveals the destructive riffwork behind Ghost Iris's Final Tale - Guitar World

What does a boost pedal actually do?
I’ve recently have gotten into pedals after 2 years of playing. Before I’d only use one pedal for my guitar playing i.e a distortion or overdrive.
However, I’ve started to become more interested in using multiple at a time as I’m aiming to get a sort of John Frusciante type of tone and I’ve heard that the MXR micro amp is a pedal that can really help.
Anyways down to my question. What does the MXR micro amp do? And what do boost pedals do in general? I’ve heard they increase the gain of the signal that my guitar produces but what does that mean? How does it affect my guitar tone and/or sound?
Thank you in advance

Ice Cream Man Guitar Lesson – Van Halen
In this Ice Cream Man guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great cover song from Van Halen off of their debut album.
The song was originally written and recorded by Chicago blues musician John Brim, but Eddie and company certainly made it their own with this fan favorite.
The tuning for the acoustic section that is played by David Lee Roth at the beginning of the song is open Eb tuning. The notes are, starting from the 6th string, Eb Bb Eb G Bb Eb. The tuning Eddie is using for the electric guitar parts when the full band enters is Eb standard tuning, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.
The acoustic section is made much easier to play with this tuning and is played finger style by Roth. It is pretty repetitive, using the same progression 4 times, but the 3rd time does contains a variation.
After Eddie begins to play, he is playing a more stripped down rock blues version of that classic blues riff. However, once he launches into the solo, everything is taken to a whole new level.
Eddie uses some extremely wide stretches at the beginning of the solo, which will be challenging for pretty much all players. He is performing a symmetrical lick and of course, he is quite well known for them. In fact, there will be another one at the end of the song.
The solo is full of classic Eddie licks and although it is very challenging, it is a lot of fun to play.
After the solo we get back to the chorus riff before Eddie launches into a series of quick fills which I will also cover note-for-note.
The ending is a pretty big departure from the rest of the song with a classic blues turnaround as it's foundation following by a quick symmetrical lick by Eddie to end the song.
I hope you guys enjoy learning this Van Halen classic! Carl...

Nights In White Satin Guitar Lesson – The Moody Blues
In this Nights In White Satin guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play all the chords and solo for this amazing song from The Moody Blues on acoustic guitar.
The tuning is standard tuning E A D G B E.
There are a few chord progressions to contend with here. Those include the verse, chorus and flute solo sections. These chords are mostly basic open position chords with a few basic barre chords thrown in there as well.
I have also transcribed the flute solo for guitar. So if you are in a group with a couple of guitar players, you can easily recreate the whole song. 🙂
Have fun with this great song!

Give It Away Guitar Lesson – Red Hot Chili Peppers
In this Give It Away guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song off of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Blood Sugar Sex Magik album.
The tuning is standard tuning E A D G B E.
The intro is one of the hardest parts of the song to get right. John Frusciante incorporates some difficult unison bends while also holding down a double-stop.
The main riff, which is the verse of the song, consists of a single note riff that has some tricky rhythms in it. You will also need to be pretty good at muting unwanted strings on the guitar, as Frusciante uses lots of muting throughout the riff. The muting helps make the single notes sound big and fat, a signature technique of his.
The chorus is a riff that will vary throughout the song, so play close attention to the difference between them.
For the solos, since they are created using a backwards guitar recording effect in the studio, I have instead demonstrated the three scale types you can use to create an improvised solo. These are the same scales Frusciante used for his solos.
Have fun with this fun yet challenging song from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the great John Frusciante!
Thanks! Carl..

Berklee online lessons
Hey everyone,
I'm thinking about taking some Berklee online classes. I've been playing a few years, but am stuck in a rut. I love playing, but feel I need more focus, direction, and practice to get better and I feel like this will help. The first course I'm considering it's below, I don't know most of the material in the description.
https://online.berklee.edu/courses/guitar-chords-101
Also to consider, it's going to cost me $1100. I'm not concerned with the cost, I just wanted to make sure it's my best value and see what other options are out there. Thanks in advance!

Tips on not strumming all strings?
I recently decided to learn swing life away by rise against, and I'm pretty new to finger style. Most parts of the song are played strumming 4 strings then 2 then 3 then 2 in one bar, and I've found it really difficult to get that down. Any video lessons or tips that might be able to help?

Some beginner questions
Hi, total noob here. I’ve been teaching myself to play my dad’s old acoustic guitar for the last week or so, and I have some questions:
I’ve heard people talk about changing guitar strings, should I do that? This guitar is 10+ years old and according to my dad has never had them changed. But it also wasn’t used much till I picked it up. On that note, should I be doing anything else maintenance wise?
What’s the best way to learn? I’ve been using an app called SimplyGuitar, and it works well for me, but if there are other apps or online courses that are better please let me know.
Is my wrist supposed to hurt this much? I’ve seen other people talk about finger pain, but my wrist on my left hand has been super sore as well. Is that common at all?
Thanks in advance if you answer any of these, and I also apologize in advance if any of these are stupid questions.

Vibrato Technique – Elad – Student Spotlight
In this Student Spotlight lesson video, I will try to help Elad develop a more consistent vibrato technique.
The main focus of this video will be on the rhythm of the vibrato and learning to control it. Having a nice even vibrato is what really makes those notes sing.
Far too often, players focus more on the technique of the vibrato more than the actual sound of the vibrato.
I will give Elad some practice tips that will help him even out his vibrato. In most cases, you just need to bring this to a player's attention since they usually never focus on the timing of the vibrato. But with that little bit of focus, they will find that their vibrato will begin to even out and be more controlled.
If you would like to submit your own Student Spotlight question to me for me to answer on YouTube, please submit your video via the Student Spotlight Video Uploader.
Thanks! Carl...

This Love Guitar Lesson – Pantera
In this guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play Pantera's "This Love" note-for-note.
The tuning is Eb tuning, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.
The song just has so many cool guitar riffs in it. The opening arpeggio picked clean riffs are instantly recognizable. These arpeggios continue through the verse section.
After a quick lead guitar fill, we are then thrown into the high powered chorus. The timing can be a bit tricky for the chorus riff, so I will break it down in depth and teach you how to count it out correctly in your practice.
As we move on through the song, we are introduced to a few more riffs and another quick lead fill and the bridge section which contains the most difficult riff of the song. You will perhaps see a lot of people playing covers of "This Love" that play this section slightly differently than Dimebag did, but I will demonstrate Dimebag's version which is slightly harder to play, but sounds better IMO.
I will also cover Dimebag's solo note-for-note. This solo is very melodic solo and one of Dime's easier solos to play.
I hope you guys enjoy this in-depth tutorial of this great song from Pantera!

Songs like Sir Duke
Hey guys, I just learned Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder and it has quickly become my favorite song to play. Especially the musical break.
Can you recommend any more songs like that? It's just fast enough without being a shredder and it's catchy/fun/happy.
Thanks
