How to work on creativity

Plethora of knowledge, lack of creativity. Anyone else been stuck here?

I’m an intermediate player but music, creativity specifically, does not come natural to me. When it comes to creating more than basic rhythms and riffs/solos, I really seem to struggle.

I try the whole humming/singing along but everything always ends up sounding the same. Only after I listen to an example am I able to actually come up with something that I could not make just on my own and at that point I feel like I’m just ripping someone else off.

I hope this makes sense and that there is hope for improvement and I’m not just doomed to being stuck at this plateau. Any advice, lessons or help in general is appreciated. Thanks guys.

Advice?

So basically I’ve been playing acoustic casually for years but never really delve into playing like that. I know many chords and many songs but not really much more. I’ve recently found inspiration to play and become very good no matter how hard it is or how long it takes. My biggest question is, where is the best place to start?

Mary Jane’s Last Dance Guitar Lesson – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

In this Mary Jane's Last Dance guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in it's entirety.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.

Most of the chord progressions in "Mary Jane's Last Dance" are pretty basic, however, there are quite a few variations and embellishments thrown in there to keep things interesting. I will demonstrate all of those variations so that you can freely use them where you want, which is how it is performed on the recording and in live performances.

Guitarist Mike Campbell adds some additional fills along the way and a very nice solo. I will show you the main fills and the solo note-for-note.

Tom Petty also has a nice solo towards the end that I will cover as well.

Have fun with this great laid back rock classic! Carl...

Rodrigo y Gabriela - Tamacun help (speed)

Hi folks. I’m having trouble keeping up with Rodrigo’s picking speed for this song’s main riff (i.e. intro riff). Specifically, when I have to quickly play single notes moving across from the 3rd to 2nd to 1st strings. No issues with speed of the hand on the fretboard, just trying to keep up with my picking hand.

I find that the only way I can pick that fast is if I tense the bicep of my picking hand, but that isn’t sustainable. I watched him play and he uses downward picking motions for each note when playing across those three strings, but he does not simply drag the pick across. Looks like each note is a dedicated motion.

Any advice on how to improve?

Metal Health (Bang Your Head) Guitar Lesson – Quiet Riot

In this Metal Health guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great classic metal anthem by Quiet Riot in it's entirety.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E. However, the original recording is not quite A440, instead it is slightly flat. So playing along with the original recording might not sound great to you unless you match the tuning.

The intro to this song is instantly recognizable and so fun to play. I will take you through each section of the song in the order that each appears on the original recording.

I will also cover guitarist Carlos Cavazo's guitar solo note-for-note. This solo uses many of the guitar techniques that dominated the 80's including fast blues based licks, unison octaves, pick tapping and tremolo picking.

In addition to the main solo, I will also cover the lead guitar fills played during the breakdown section. For the outro solo, I will just demonstrate the scale patterns that are used instead of breaking it down note-for-note.

Have fun learning this metal classic by Quiet Riot! Carl...

How to play like Eric Schenkman of the Spin Doctors?

Hello,

After learning most of the guitar parts in the songs from "pocket full of kryptonite" I've noticed Eric Schenkman uses a technique where he strums the lower strings only in a very funky/bluesy way and he comes out with the most amazing stuff. (see the intro to "Little miss can't be wrong" for reference)

But when I try to do the same thing, it sounds really really bad.

So my first question would be what's the secret behind Eric's technique? what should I be looking to emulate melody-wise? (if that makes any sense).

My second question would be if there are more guitarists who sound like that. Who are they? cause I really dig that style.

Sorry for the noob question but I guess I'm trying to understand how this technique works music theory-wise.

10 types of 7th chords

Here is a quick tour of 10 different types of 7th chords. I demonstrate them using single string arpeggios, because I find that it is easier to understand the intervals that make up different chords and scales when you look at them on just one string. Each arpeggio is paired with a root position voicing that matches the arpeggio, so you can hear them in context with one another.

Baba O’Riley Guitar Lesson – The Who

In this Baba O'Riley guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song from The Who in it's entirety.

The tuning is standard tuning with a capo at the 1st fret. You can play this song just fine without the capo, but Pete Townshend uses a capo, so I will as well for this lesson video.

The chord progressions used in "Baba O'Riley" are quite simple, yet very powerful. This song has such a cool vibe about it created by a great vocal melody and a powerful rhythm section.

I will cover each chord progression in the order that each appears on the original recording.

I will also cover Pete Townshend's guitar solo note-for-note and the musical interlude towards the end of the song.

Have fun learning this classic from The Who! Carl...
