New T Shirts Now Available

I’ve always wanted to have some kind of merch available for the site, and today I’m proud to say that the New Learning Guitar Now T Shirt Shop is officially open.

I bought the domain name learningguitarnow . com way back in June of 2006 and proceeded put up the first version of the site a few months after this time.  So this is actually the 15 Year Anniversary of the website and I think it’s a great way to commemorate this time with T Shirts that are Learning Guitar Now branded.

Currently we are only shipping to the US and Canada. Due to the amount of restrictions and complications with VAT we have decided not to ship internationally at this time.

I spent a lot of time working on the designs and had some outside help as I’m terrible at designing T Shirts all by myself lol.  That’s one of the main reasons I never offered any.    To me these T Shirts fit and look great with either jeans or shorts.

I also ordered and tested about 30 shirts to make sure they looked the right way, and then went about wearing them and washing them to make sure they would hold up.  I can confidently say that I think these shirts are great and I’ll be wearing them in many of the upcoming lessons.

You can read all about the sizing of the shirts at the link below.  There is also a size chart available on each T Shirt page.

Here’s me wearing one of the designs The Blues in a Tri Blend Vintage Black.

Thanks for the support throughout the years and looking forward to the next 15 years of lessons.  :)

Something To Believe In Guitar Lesson – Poison

In this Something To Believe In guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great ballad from Poison in its entirety.

The tuning is Eb standard tuning. That is, starting from the 6th string, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.

First off, I forgot to cover a quick little guitar fill that introduces the guitar chord progressions of the song. This fill occurs at the 48 second mark of the song. All you need to do is a 2-4 hammer-on on the A string, followed by a 2-4 hammer-on on the D string, then a 2-4 hammer-on on the A string again. 🙂

I will cover the chord progression on acoustic guitar even though there are some electric guitars being used in there as well.

I will then switch to an electric and demonstrate all of C.C. Deville's great lead guitar work throughout "Something To Believe In". As I teach each fill, I will call out the minute and second mark of each so that you will know where I am at in the song at all times.

After these fills, I will cover C.C.'s epic main guitar solo note-for-note. This is by far my favorite solo of his as it contains great melodies, unique playing techniques and more. Definitely a classic!

Have fun learning this great ballad from Poison! Carl...

Lucky Guitar Lesson – Radiohead

In this Lucky guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great Radiohead song off of their OK Computer album.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.

I will go through each section of the song in the order that each appears on the original recording.

Along the way, I will cover not only the guitar chords, but also many of the guitar melodies that are heard. I won't be covering absolutely every little guitar detail since the are a lot of overdubs on the recording, but we will definitely take a look at all of the essential parts.

Have fun with this great Radiohead classic! Carl...

Unchain The Night Guitar Lesson – Dokken

In this Unchain The Night guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great classic Dokken track note-for-note.

The tuning is Eb standard tuning. That is, starting from the 6th string, Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb.

I will start the lesson with an in-depth look at the clean guitar section that opens the song. This section is comprised of arpeggiated chords with a melody on top. Most of the picking falls into a pattern, which makes memorizing this section a lot easier once you know that pattern.

From there I will go through all of the high gain riffs in "Unchain The Night" in the order that each appears on the original recording. The main riff is simply put, a killer riff that is a lot of fun to play.

However, as always whenever George Lynch is playing, the real star of the show is his guitar solos. Ever since I watched George Lynch play in 1991 with Lynch Mob on the ABC in concert series, he has been one of my favorite players. Seriously check out the video from this concert series on YouTube, his playing is out of this world.

I will show you, note-for-note, how to play George's main solo and the outro solo until the vocals come back in. These solos contain lots of signature moves by George Lynch include intense legato licks, crazy trill slides, rapid fire alternate picking and massive bends with great control of the intonation.

Have fun learning this Dokken classic! Carl...

Duality Guitar Lesson – Slipknot

In this Duality guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this killer track from Slipknot note-for-note.

The tuning is drop B tuning. That is, starting from the 6th string, you will tune your guitar down to B F# B E G# C#.

There are some absolutely killer riffs in this one. It is a scorching metal guitar workout that seems to never let up yet remains highly musical and melodic at the same time.

I will take you through each section of the song in the order that each appears on the original recording.

While we work our way through the various riffs, I will let you know which part is being played by either Mick Thompson or Jim Root.

Some of the most difficult sections of the song are the verses. This is when both Jim Root and Mick Thomson are playing rapid fire tremolo picking while the melodic lines they are playing in the fret-hand are jumping all over the fretboard very quickly. As I mention in the video lesson, it is best to first learn the melodies they are playing and the timing of the notes. After that, you can just set your picking hand on autopilot with the tremolo picking while following along with the melody notes.

I hope you guys enjoy learning this absolutely killer song from Slipknot. It can be a challenge to get all of the riffs down, but once you do, it is a lot of fun to play! Carl...

Stratego Guitar Lesson – Iron Maiden

In this Stratego guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this great song from Iron Maiden in its entirety.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.

Keep in mind that this lesson was filmed just a few hours after "Stratego" was released. Because of that, there were no live video performances available online in order to make sure all of the guitar lines are taught in the exact same position as originally recorded.

In any case, I will take you through each section of the song in the order that each appears on the original recording.

For many of the sections, there are multiple guitar parts being played. I will demonstrate most of these parts but won't be covering every single little guitar layer or harmony line throughout the song. The main harmony lines and riffs for each section will be covered though.

I hope you guys enjoy watching this in-depth breakdown of this new (at the time this lesson was published) Iron Maiden song! Carl...

Rebel Rebel Guitar Lesson – David Bowie

In this Rebel Rebel guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this classic guitar driven song by the great David Bowie in its entirety.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.

The main riff of "Rebel Rebel" is repeatedly played for the majority of the song. It is a catchy riff that can also be a bit tricky to play accurately. But once you get the intricacies of the riff locked into your fingers, it is a lot of fun to just fall into a nice groove with it.

The are also a couple of sections (pre-chorus and chorus) that use a few basic chords and I will cover those as well. But, the majority of "Rebel Rebel" is that infectious main riff so the most of the video lesson will be covering that riff in-depth.

Have fun with this David Bowie classic! Carl...

Because Guitar Lesson – The Beatles

In this Because guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this beautiful song off of The Beatles' Abbey Road album.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E.

We have just a couple of chord progressions to learn for this one and you will be arpeggiating the chords for the entire song.

The repeated main chord progression is simply gorgeous. It provides a perfect foundation for the huge vocal harmonies that John, Paul and George are singing.

This is just a stunning piece of music written by John Lennon, that was a favorite of Paul and George.

I hope you enjoy playing as much as I do! Carl...

I’m Still Standing Guitar Lesson – Elton John

In this I'm Still Standing guitar lesson video, I will show you all of the chords and guitar solo to this great Elton John song.

The tuning is standard tuning, E A D G B E with a capo at the 1st fret for the rhythm guitar parts. You can still have the capo on your guitar during the solo, but it can also be played without the capo.

There are some great chord progressions in "I'm Still Standing" so I will cover all of those on acoustic guitar during the first half of the video lesson. I am sticking with an arrangement of the piano chords for the whole song instead of teaching some of the actual guitar chords played later in the song. Since this is a piano driven song, I think it sounds better to try and play those chords instead of the more basic guitar chords used as layers throughout the song.

I will be using a capo at the 1st fret for the chord progressions I am teaching on acoustic. This will make this song, which was originally written for piano, much easier to play on the guitar.

One unique element of the chord progressions Elton John wrote for "I'm Still Standing" is that the verse is in Bb major and the chorus is in the parallel minor key of Bb minor. This would usually be the reverse in that you would go to a major key for the chorus. But the way Elton wrote this works perfectly and gives the chorus a still upbeat yet defiant quality.

After the chords, I will then take you through guitarist Davey Johnstone's great solo for "I'm Still Standing". It is a very melodic solo that uses a lot of 6th intervals to great effect.

Have fun learning this Elton John classic! Carl...

Advice for a southpaw with wee hands?

Hi all, So, I my late fiancé was a killer guitar player and I was the stronger singer, so I never got around to learning an instrument. Today would have been our second anniversary, and I’m feeling like it’s time finally learned to play his guitar. My past attempts have kind of gone by the wayside because I’m a leftie with small hands (or because I broke a finger damned every time I learned more than two chords…), and I struggled to make even some fairly basic chords. I want to stick with it this this time. I would love to hear your thoughts on both issues: Is it better to just learn to play right-handed so I can use other people’s guitars? And does the not-being-able-to-span-the-fretboard thing get better with time, or should I go find a 7/8ths scale guitar? Please don’t tell me Django Reinhardt learned to play with two fingers… 😂 Thanks in advance for your help!
