Tips for a Bass player moving to Guitar

I’ve been playing bass for well over a year now, and so far I’ve had a blast with it. Admittedly, my knowledge of music theory is still a little lacking in some areas, but my overall form is decently good on it. Recently, I found an old Ibanez guitar belonging to my uncle. It only has two strings (both dead obviously), the action is way too low, and I might need to screw with the truss rod a bit, but it’s nothing I can’t fix.

I just ordered some new strings and a strap for this thing, and I’ve been thinking about practicing some guitar on the side rather than just sticking to bass. At the moment, a new amp is a little out of my budget, so I’ve just been playing it through my Boss Katana Bass amp for now. Are there any tips or tricks I should know going in? Anything that could benefit my practice?

Most effective way to figure out what will sound good under a lead melody that doesn't necessarily fit a specific scale?

I've been playing around with trying to compose some stuff, and I've been working on lead melodies. They typically don't necessarily fit within a specific scale, though, and that leaves me not really knowing how to approach composing rhythm guitar to go underneath it. Any thoughts on how one might most effectively figure out what will best work for rhythm, in that case?

Does anybody else struggle with memorizing new songs?

I have about six songs I've committed to memory. I'm trying to learn some more but am struggling with remembering the chord progressions and lyrics. If they are in front my me like on ultimate guitar then I have no problem reading the chords and singing the lyrics in time but I struggle with doing it from memory. Just wondering if this is part of the learning process? How many complete songs are you guys actually able to play from memory?

Everlong progress

Everlong progress

Beginner here, posting this because a few months ago when I first picked up a guitar for some reason I wanted to play Everlong. Pulled up a tutorial and quickly decided yeah, that’s not happening for a while 🤣 fast forward to now with a bit more muscle memory and finger strength and although it sounds like shit it also feels attainable so I’m proud lol. To all my fellow beginners who pulled up that first song and thought, “no way” give it a little, have fun, and it’ll come!

How in the hell are you guys "pressing lightly" on the strings?

Every single guitarist and video I talk to/watch says the same thing "you can actually press pretty light to make the chord ring out", are you guys using dental floss as strings or something?

But actually, I don't get how this works. Currently I struggle in the form of making noise as I release my fingers, and its because I'm pressing too hard. Only thing is, if I go lighter then the chord sounds like nails on a chalkboard or no sound at all. I'm worried I'm gonna spend too much time practicing a bad habit (pushing hard). What's the secret? What's something I can do to learn this?

Currently doing acoustic.

Hello, I'm a beginner on the electric guitar needing some advice

I'm interested in learning how to play electric guitar. I have a bit of experience with basic chords and barre chord shapes from playing acoustic guitar, but besides that, I'm extremely inexperienced. My goal is to be able to play my favorite genre: metalcore. Is there any place to start, or are there any courses I could find on YouTube or online? i think it would just be really helpful to be pointed in the right direction.

What are some good solos/songs to learn by ear?

One of my biggest relative weaknesses is my ear training. I can play a lot of progressions, riffs, and a couple of nifty solos, but I find myself almost totally lost without tabs or written music.

What are some good recommendations for music that is a good starting point for ear training?

The easy way to learn barre chords.

I constantly see this as something new guitarists struggle with. So I’m going to share the way I’ve taught people and they have always found it an easy progression.

First I’m going to start with what I think the 2 main problems are.

  • Strength to push all the strings down.

  • Coordination and knowledge of what it feels like to push all the strings down while using other fingers to fret.

We are going to approach this in a format of slow progression. If you’re struggling I heavily suggest starting at step 1 even if you think it’s too easy.

Step 1. Barre three strings (E, B, G). Use proper fretting technique keep your finger close to the fret without being on top of it. Now play through the strings one by one. If any have buzz adjust pressure or placement until they’re all ringing clear. Also focus on using as little pressure as possible.

Step 2. Move onto 4 strings (E, B, G, D). Now I want use to use pressure from the end of your finger to press down on the G, and D strings. For the E, and B I want you to create pressure by pulling back with your elbow. If doing this correctly you should be able to use a small amount of pressure, even allowing you to do so without squeezing with your thumb. Next make sure they all ring out clear.

Step 3. Repeat this adding one string each time playing lightly and using the method of two points of pressure. Pressing with your finger and pulling with your elbow.

Other points. -Have a guitar with a low action. - If you can’t barre yet and you’re playing with higher gauge strings it might be worth dropping them down. - Practice with a clean tone, this allows you to identify fret buzz. - This still might take a bit but it’s a good way to track progress you can see how many strings you can barre cleanly.

I hope this helps. Feel free to dm me, I’m happy to help anyone with putting more music into the world.

Learning Guitar

I’m looking to learn to play, I’ve always been fascinated with music and I’m now wanting to learn, my question is how do I start? What’s the best way to learn? I’m into country music, like Zach Bryan type songs and would like to learn some of his songs, but also listen to older country.

could it be shoulder instability?

when i try to tremolo pick on guitar. my whole arm starts bouncing off the string like a foot from guitar and turns into more of a string pecking thing. does this sound like my shoulder could be having instibility issue? or do you think a physio therapist can help which i am seeing soon. how soo? idk but this is driving me mad why my hand does this. just imagine the most extreme string pecking you've every seen on a newbie. I'm not necessarily "looking for medical advice. but an opinion and hopefully someone here has fixed the same problem or knows someone who has. And btw i should add that its not just my wrist, my whole are goes flying. I tried certain prescription from my doctor. that i thought at first was helping but i don't think it is helping me100 percent

thanks for your time

sincerely
